What is the best satellite phone?
Posted Dec.09, 2010 in Satellite News
Are satellite phones worth and does anyone have one. My husband is being shipped to Iraq. I would like to be in contact with him. So anyone in the military who has one or used one while they were station over there I would like to hear from.

An iridium sattelite phone works everywhere but they are expensive. I forgot how much it is btu I think its around 400$ a month for unlimited calls. Hed be better off using what they have hwere hes deployed. Believe me we always find ways to call loved ones.

The phone itself costs around $400 base price, and air time costs about $1.25 a minute. It will be cheaper for him to buy a GSM phone, and cheaper still to use the MWR phone bank.

If your husband is still alive than buy him Thuraya.May be the best sattelite phones.I think some of them have GPS too.
With it he can find the way for home faster before it becomes too late.

Oh so well worth the money. I bought my Thuraya about midway through my first tour in OIF 1. Then used it again when I went back for my second tour. You can get base models at around $500 or so, the one I bought was up there and ran me around $1100. I know if you want you can go to ebay and get one off of there for a better than average price. There are cell phones you can purchase there now that are like “go-phones’ here in the states. It just depends upon where he’s at like big FOB or away from any major cities. I went with the SAT phone most of the time just for convenience. The cards are expensive as are the minutes, about 50 cents a minute, but to me it was well worth it to talk to my son anytime I wanted with no lines at all. Best of luck and if you want I’ll pinpoint the better ones if you want to email me directly.
