You’d need at least two satellites to cover the whole earth, since any one is going to at most (and then only if it is far enough away) be able to cover only half the earth. They’d need to move in sync with each other to be sure to cover the whole planet.

Oddly enough, I merely searched for ”how do communication satellites work” and got a few dozen or more websites…
Including
http://atek.org/satellite/work.html
and
http://www.gma.org/surfing/sats.html
and
http://www.intelsat.com/resources/satellite-basics/how-it-works.asp
and
http://science.howstuffworks.com/satellite5.htm
Feel free to try the same amazing ”trick” for yourself!!
