My friend tells me that they use satellites instead of towers. I have AT&T and i know that they use towers.

Towers like everyone else.
Your friend is wrong.
The only satellite phone service is by a company called Iridium.
Update: Unlike how the poster below me states, it uses towers and land lines. Satellite time is extremely expensive. Your call goes from your phone, to the tower, where it is then integrated in with the local land line systems and goes on from there. Even when you call overseas you are more likely going to be routed through an undersea fiber optic cable than through a satellite.

It is a combination of both. It uses a tower first to start the call. If the number is in the area then it may not have to go to a satellite. If you are calling from one side of the country to the other then it will hit a tower, go over a satellite then go out to another tower.
