It also comes with the regular factory 5 dBi omni-directional antenna. Why choose between directional and omni-directional antennas when you can have both? This is the newest AWUS036H version from Alfa, brand new in the retail box! It includes the adapter, a 5 dBi antenna, driver CD, USB cable, and the 7 dBi directional antenna. Check directly with Alfa to verify you are getting a 100% genuine Alfa adapter and not one of those knockoffs floating around. What sets this USB device apart from other USB adapters on the market is that this has an RP-SMA antenna connector so that you can add an external antenna to boost your wireless range. Directional vs. Omin-directional antennas The above image is not a precise scientific comparison drawing, but an illustration to show in a general sense how the two antenna types compare. Omni-directional antennas can detect signals from multiple directions. Gain is not concentrated in one particular direction. Omni-directional antennas work best when you are mobile and do not know where signals are originating. Directional antennas concentrate gain in a particular direction. While the antenna does not need to be in a perfect line of sight to the signal, it needs to be pointed in the general direction. Due to the way antennas work, directional antennas can pick up signals that are the in the opposite direction, but they will be weaker than if the antenna was pointed in that direction. As our graphic above illustrates, each antenna type has an advantage over the other. That is why it is best to have each type, so you can use the antenna that is best for your particular needs. Because directional antennas work best in the direction they are pointed, in many cases you will detect more signals overall with your omni-directional antenna, but find that your directional antenna may get stronger signal strength to signals it is aimed at, and it may also detect additional signals in the direction it is pointed, signals the omni cannot see. The Alfa AWUS036H wireless USB adapter is a great product to use with either antenna as it has a stunning 1000mw output power. Additionally, if you are looking for a device to connect to an outdoor 2.4 GHz antenna, such as on a boat or an RV, this is a great wireless adapter to have. Because this is a USB adapter, it works on any computer (desktop or laptop) that has a USB port. In addition to working with the usual suspects (Win98SE/2000/ME/XP), this also works with Windows Vista and Windows 7, Linux (kernel 2.6.6 and later) and Macintosh (OS version 10.3 through 10.6 (10.6 use requires 32-bit kernel boot). It does not pull in signals equally from all around, but should pull in better range and signal in the direction it is pointed. So you may see more signals overall with the omni, but the directional one will help you get the best signal to one in particular. Whether I use the omni or the directional, I see 3 signals, and all of them have the same number of bars in Windows. How can this be? -antenna placement is very important. Wi-Fi signals bounce around and can be impacted by invisible interference (noise). Also note that when using a utility that reports signals as 4 or 5 bars, each bar represents 20-25% of signal strength. So one antenna may be pulling in the signal 15% better than the other, and yet the difference in bars may be only 0 or 1. We recommend using more detailed programs for precise signal strength analysis. Our support staff has over 100 years of combined Wi-Fi and antenna experience, so please contact us for help with antenna placement and details on what programs to use for signal strength testing. Why would this adapter work better than a generic 1000mW USB adapter, since they both have the same output power? -1000mW refers to the maximum output power at which the device can operate. It is important to read the fine print. Many generics can technically output at 1000mw max, but can only do so at very slow connection speeds. The other important distinction is the chipset. The Alfa has a Realtek RTL8187 chip which is the most sensitive Realtek G chipset. Many generics will say they use a Realtek chipset just like Alfa, but they use an RT8187B chip, which has much weaker receive sensitivity. Alfa also puts their item though much stricter quality control tests and high quality manufacturing processes, meaning your adapter is likely to last much much longer than a cheaply assembled knockoff. How far away can I pick up signals with this? -For this question there is no exact answer. Wireless range is an imperfect science. The range you get with any adapter will vary markedly depending on the strength and quality of the wireless access point being used, as well as obstacles and interference in the area. Keep in mind that interference can often be invisible. The Alfa is the longest range and most powerful standalone wireless adapter on the market at the time of this writing. Basically, if this kit does not work for you, you will likely need to look into some sort of high gain outdoor setup. If you are trying to pick up signals from far away, and are not sure this will give you enough range, please contact us with details about your situation and we may be able to offer an opinion. US 50 States + Puerto Rico: $4.00 US Postal Priority Mail. This includes delivery confirmation and insurance. According to the US Postal Service, Priority Mail takes an average of 2-3 delivery days to arrive. This is not a guaranteed transit time though, it is just an average delivery time. US 48 States: $7.50 UPS Ground Service. This includes insurance and tracking. This rate is only for bidders in the Continental US. We do ship to Alaska/Hawaii and APO/FPO but it must go via the US Postal Service so please take a look at a US Postal option. If you need the item shipped via an expedited method like 2nd Day Air, please inquire with your zip code for rates before bidding. UPS Ground can take from 1-7 days or longer depending on your proximity to our shipping location which is in Florida. UPS can take longer than US Postal Service Priority Mail, but UPS tracking tends to be updated more often than Postal Service tracking, and UPS tracking typically posts an estimated delivery date online within 12 hours after shipping, where as US Postal Service tracking does not. International Shipping Rates &; Customs Duty Information: We ship worldwide via Standard First Class mail. This method is $5.99 ($3.99 to Canada) but can take 2-4 weeks or longer to arrive. This is primarily because the item can be held at customs for inspection for a long period. If you cannot wait 2-4 weeks or longer for free First Class International Service, consider one of these faster worldwide options: Express Mail International Service: $39.00, includes tracking and insurance, takes 4-7 days to arrive on average *Import duties and taxes are not included in the item price or shipping charges. At Rokland, our products are guaranteed to work for 30 days. Additionally, we want customers to be able to return products that they don’t want, don’t like, or did not mean to buy. That said, we do incur costs for each return, such as the nonrefundable auction listing and feature fees. If an item returned was new, we must resell it for much less money as a used open box item. Therefore, we charge a minimal 10% restocking fee on all returned items (new and used), except for products that test defective upon receipt back here. We believe this is a fair policy as most auction sellers do not allow for any non-defective items to be returned at all, and the ones that do typically charge a 20% restocking fee. Again, this 10% restocking fee will be applied to all returns except where a product is reported to us as defective and tests defective upon receipt back here (if the product you return is defective we can send a replacement at our expense or issue a refund of the item price, whichever you prefer). A restocking fee WILL be charged even in the event a product does not work on your PC due to incompatibility or a conflict with another piece of hardware on your system, so long as the product is not defective. We can work with you to troubleshoot the problem if you have any difficulty getting it to work. We will not charge a restocking fee if you wish to exchange a non-defective product for something else, however a new shipping charge will apply for the new shipment. While we would certainly appreciate your business, if you feel that a restocking fee would not be acceptable in the event you want to return a non-defective product to us, please do not make the purchase. If you do wish to return a product, please contact us for an RMA number and return address instructions. In addition to the restocking fee (which will be deducted from your refund), shipping and return shipping expenses are not refundable under any circumstance unless we ship you the incorrect product. In the event we send the wrong item, we will send the correct one to you at our expense and also reimburse you for your return shipping of the incorrect product. There are no other warranties on this auction, expressed or implied. The exception to this is if the description states there is a manufacturer’s warranty. In this event the item should be returned to the manufacturer in accordance with that warranty if necessary. 1. Customs duty and tax: Many countries will charge the recipient import tax on items purchased on auction. We do not have knowledge of which countries charge tax and how much it could be. Customers are advised to contact their local postal or tax offices prior to bidding. Rokand is not responsible and will not reimburse international buyers for taxes charged on delivery. Insurance and proof of shipment: Items sent outside the USA are insured. US Postal Regulations state insurance covers only the cost of the product, and does not cover the shipping charge. When you inquire for shipping rate quotes, we will advise you of the average time frame for delivery. If your product has not arrived within 30 mailing days of shipping, please contact us so we can trace the package for you. All parcels are sent with tracking and tracking information is provided to the customer at the time of shipment. If your package is lost in transit, we will file an insurance claim on your behalf. The US Postal Service requires that all insurance claim filings include a signed letter from you, the recipient, stating you have not received the parcel shipped to your address. This is a requirement and the letter can be faxed to us, scanned and emailed, or sent through Postal mail. We cannot issue any refunds for lost packages or ship any replacements without this letter. If you select a replacement, we will pay to ship it to you. If you select a refund, you will be refunded only the price of the product, as noted above US Postal Regulations do not allow us to insure the cost of the postage. 3. Returns: Buyers outside the USA may return products in accordance with our above advertised return policy.
